Inverter chargers combine and inverter and a battery charger.  They can be used with a solar PV array when another there is another AC power source available, such as a diesel generator.   They can operate as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).  In essence they offer all the features of an inverter and charger in one compact enclosure. These intelligent devices can behave either as an inverter or a charger and can switch between one and other as required.  Inverter-chargers can be connected to the electricity grid, but they are not grid tied inverters.

VICTRON

All features of a sine wave inverter and charger in one compact enclosure. UPS functionality: seamless transfer from external AC to inverter supply.

A unique AC power management system will prevent overload of a limited AC source. First, battery charging will automatically be reduced when otherwise an overload would occur. The second level will boost the output of a generator or shore side supply with power taken from the battery: where peak power is often required only for a limited period, the Phoenix MultiPlus will make sure that insufficient shore or generator power is immediately compensated for by power from the battery.

Models range from 800VA to 3000VA per module.
Scalable: any number of units can be paralleled in single phase, split phase and three phase configuration.

POWERMASTER COMBI SL Series combines a powerful sine wave inverter, sophisticated battery charger (with adaptive charge technology), a solar panel regulator and high-speed AC transfer switch all integrated into a single compact enclosure.
 

STUDER
Inverter chargers with transfer relay, offer the possibility to charge batteries from various sources of supply (electricity grid, solar generator...etc).

There are three types of inverter in this range:

XP COMPACT These consist of fully automatic pure sine wave inverters with battery chargers and transfer systems.  The XP Compact series offers a pure sine wave inverter from 1100W to 1600W, and a 4 stage fully automatic charger adjustable from 0-45A
