Why is a solar regulator required?
The main function of the solar regulator or solar controller is to keep batteries fully charged. The solar controller regulates the flow of electricity from a solar panel to the battery without allowing the battery to be overcharged and at the same time preventing current flowing back from the battery to the solar panel during the night. A solar charge controller constantly monitors the battery voltage. When the batteries are fully charged, the controller will stop or decrease the amount of current flowing from the solar panels into the battery. When the batteries are being discharged to a low level, many controllers will stop the current flowing from the battery to the DC Load.
Solar regulators are an essential component of battery charging systems without them batteries will experience loss of life and degradation. Without overcharge protection the life expectancy of batteries are reduced. Solar controllers vary in type and operation from simple controllers to sophisticated controllers that utilize pulse width modulation (PWM) or maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to assure the battery is being kept fully charged.
